Design A Room
This fun web site from the National Wood Flooring Association shows you antique pine and other woods in various rooms, allowing you to rotate the grain/direction of the wood and compare species. Simply rotating the direction gives you a glimpse of how diverse your design options are.
Underlayment
It’s typical to use an underlayment, a thin layer that you put down on top of the subfloor (e.g., the plywood) just before putting down your new flooring. Underlayment helps smooth out the little inconsistencies in the subfloor and floor, may—depending on material—act as a moisture barrier, and can reduce the noise that occurs when people walk on the floor. Although choice of underlayment is usually left up to the installer, you may want to request a specific underlayment. Check out Quiet Walk underlayment, which does a good job of reducing the clomping sound of feet on hardwood flooring. This is especially helpful for stairs and upper stories.
